Check of a state and replacement of wires of the battery

Periodically check battery wires on all their length for existence of damages, cracks and progar of isolation, and also signs of corrosion of a vein. The bad contact of tips of wires of the battery can be the reason of difficulties at start of the engine and decrease in the power developed by it.


  1. Check a condition of the tips of wires which are put on plugs for existence of cracks, weakening of fastening on a vein and corrosion traces. Presence of a fragile korkoobrazny raid of white color on battery plugs, tips of wires and under isolation is a sign of corrosion of a wire in case of which detection it has to be replaced. Check plugs and tips of wires for existence of deformations, losses or weakening of fixing bolts and traces of corrosion.
  2. At removal of wires always first of all disconnect from the battery negative (and connect the last), otherwise the probability of a casual zakorachivaniye of a positive pole on weight is not excluded by a key at easing/tightening of a terminal clip. Even if only the positive wire is subject to replacement before starting its removal disconnect from the battery negative (more detailed information on replacement of wires of the battery see in the Head Nastroyki and routine maintenance).

If the radio tape recorder in your car is equipped with a security code before disconnecting a negative wire from the battery make sure that you know this code.

  1. Disconnect old wires from the battery, then track each of them till the opposite end and disconnect from plugs of the traction relay of a starter and grounding. Try to remember how each of wires is laid in a motive compartment for the purpose of their correct installation at assembly.
  2. In case of need replacements any of wires (or both) take with yourself in shop old. It is extremely important that the new wire on a design of tips, a standard size and other parameters corresponded to removed. Wires have the distinctive features facilitating their correct identification at the choice: the positive wire is usually covered with isolation of red color and has bigger cross section; the wire of grounding of usually black color, also has the smaller size cross section.
  3. Remove from a carving part of terminal connections of the traction relay and mass of the engine corrosion traces by means of a wire brush. Slightly grease battery plugs with inhibitor of corrosion or acid-free vaseline for prevention of corrosion in the future.
  4. Connect a wire to the plug of the traction relay or grounding and reliably tighten a fixing bolt / nut.
  5. Before connecting a wire to the battery make sure that it reaches it without tension.
  6. The first connect a positive wire, afterwards - negative.
