Check of functioning and replacement of the thermostat

Do not uncover a radiator, do not merge a cooler of system and you do not make replacement of the thermostat until the engine completely does not cool down.

Functioning check

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Before coming to a conclusion that problems in the cooling system are connected with failure of the thermostat check the cooler level, a tension of a driving belt (The head Nastroyki and routine maintenance) and serviceability of the measuring instrument (or a control lamp) temperatures.
  2. If there are suspicions (based on indications of the measuring instrument of temperature or speed of the beginning of giving by a heater in salon of hot air) that the warming up of the engine lasts long too, then it is possible to assume that there was a jamming of the thermostat in open situation. Replace the thermostat new, or obviously serviceable.
  3. If the engine begins to overheat, feel a hand the top hose of a radiator. When the hose is not heated, and the engine hot, the thermostat most likely is jammed in a closed position and blocks circulation of a cooler through a radiator. Replace the thermostat.

It is not necessary to continue operation of the car with the removed thermostat. The on-board computer at the same time can pass into the mode of an open contour when tracking toxicity of the fulfilled gases stops and optimization of fuel consumption is broken.

  1. If the top hose of a radiator is heated, it means that the thermostat is open and there is a normal circulation of a cooler through a radiator. In this case apply for information to the Section Diagnostics of Malfunctions at the beginning of this manual.

Replacement

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Disconnect a negative wire from the battery.
  2. Empty the cooling system (The head Nastroyki and routine maintenance). If the cooler was filled in it only recently, or is in satisfactory condition, keep it for reuse.
  3. For detection of location of the thermostat, track a way of laying of the top hose of a radiator.
  1. Weaken a collar(s) and disconnect a hose(s) from the union(s). If the hose "stuck", grasp it самоконтрящимися with pincers closer to the end and try to rotate it on the union, then, in case of success, remove a hose from the union. If the hose is strongly damaged as a result of material aging, cut off it from the union and at assembly replace new.
  1. If the external surface of the big union which the hose is put on is damaged as a result of impact of corrosion, it can undergo further destruction in the course of removal of a hose. In that case the cover of the case of the thermostat has to be replaced.
  2. Give bolts and uncover the thermostat case. If the cover "stuck", tap it for release by the hammer with soft brisk. Be ready to the passage of a certain quantity of a cooler at laying destruction.
  1. After a detachment of a hose(s) give bolts (shooters) and remove the case from the engine - the V8 engine thermostat case located behind a support of one of hinged units is shown.
Location on the 6-cylinder engine.
  1. Remember how (what end face up) the thermostat was installed, then remove it.
  2. Zakuporte rags an opening in the engine, then scratch out all traces of material of old laying and sealant from the interfaced surfaces of the case of the thermostat and a cover of a head. Take rags from an opening and wipe the interfaced surfaces with acetone.
  3. Install the new thermostat in the case. Track correctness of orientation of the thermostat at installation - the end equipped with a spring has to be directed to the engine.
  4. Apply a thin film of RTV sealant on both parties of new laying and install laying on the case.
  5. Establish into place a cover and bolts. Tighten bolts with the required effort.
  6. Connect a hose(s) to the union(s) and reliably fix it by collar(s).
  7. Fill the cooling system (The head Nastroyki and routine maintenance).
  8. Start the engine, let's it get warm up to the normal working temperature, then Make sure of lack of leakages of a cooler and check serviceability of functioning of the thermostat (see item 2 - 4).
