Installation of piston rings

Before installation of new piston rings it is necessary to perform measurement of gaps in their locks. It is meant that the side gap of rings in flutes is checked earlier and conforms to requirements of Specifications (Section Check of a Condition of Conrod and Piston Assemblies).


  1. Spread out conrod and piston assemblies and sets of new rings so that in the course of measurement of gaps and assembly of the engine of a ring were constantly "tied" to the assemblies and cylinders.
  2. Insert top (No. 1) a piston ring into the first cylinder of the engine and establish it perpendicular to cylinder walls, having leveled by introduction to the piston cylinder the bottom forward. The ring has to appear in the lower part of the cylinder, around border of the course of rings.
  1. For check of a gap in the lock piston a ring it has to be inserted into the cylinder and is leveled perpendicular to its walls (it simplest to achieve, pushing a ring into the cylinder the piston bottom, as shown in a picture).
  1. For measurement of a gap in the lock of a ring enter into space between probe edge ring end faces, having picked up them so that their total thickness equaled to gap size. At the same time the probe has to slide in a lock gap with an easy resistance. Compare results of measurement to requirements of Specifications. If the gap exceeds the maximum admissible value, once again make sure that the compared characteristic corresponds to chosen ring.
  1. Having established a ring perpendicular to cylinder walls, measure a gap in its lock by means of the probe of lezviyny type.
  1. If the gap is too small, it has to be increased in order to avoid a lock smykaniye in the course of thermal expansion of a ring during the operation of the engine as it can lead to serious consequences. The gap can be expanded by careful boring of end faces of a ring in its lock a file. Clamp a file in a vice with soft sponges, put on a ring the lock a file and slowly pull it on yourself, removing material from end faces. Pull a ring only on yourself (see the drawing below).
  1. If the gap in the lock is too small, clamp a file in a vice with soft sponges and, having put on it a ring the lock, pull it on yourself, removing a little material from end faces.
  1. The excessive gap in the lock of a ring is not crime if does not exceed 1 mm. Again, once again check the compared data for compliance to their checked ring. Make sure that the acquired set of rings corresponds to type of the engine of your car.
  2. Repeat the procedure for each of rings which will be established in the first cylinder, then you pass to the remained cylinders. You remember need of support of compliance of rings to the pistons and cylinders.
  3. After completion of check/correction of gaps in locks of piston rings, rings have to be installed on pistons.
  4. The oil scraper ring usually is established by the first (lower on the piston). It consists their three separate sections. At first insert into a flute on the piston a ring dilator. If the lock uvula is applied to prevention of rotation of a ring, insert it into drilling in a flute. Then establish the lower side section of a ring. Do not use the tool for installation of rings for putting on on the piston of side sections of oil scraper rings. Instead bring one end of section to a flute between a dilator and a wall of a flute and, firmly holding it a finger, gradually fill the section rest in a flute, running with pressing over its perimeter a finger of other hand. Then, a similar image, establish the second side section of a ring.

Do not use any special tool to installation of side sections of an oil scraper ring.
  1. After installation of all three sections of an oil scraper ring make sure that both (top and lower) its side sections freely rotate in a flute.
  2. The average (No. 2) a compression ring is established by the second. On it the tag which has to be turned at installation up, to the piston bottom is beaten usually out. The party of the second compression ring with chamfered has to be turned down in all engines, on 6-cylinder engines the ring has to be established by a tag in the form of two points up, on V8 engines the identification tag represents drilling, the beaten-out letter Oh, oval deepening or the word TOP (top).

Without fail follow instructions on packing of set of rings - various manufacturers can impose various requirements to an order of implementation of this procedure. Do not mix an average compression ring with top - they have different cross sections.

  1. Use the special tool for installation of piston rings and track that the tag on a ring was turned up. Insert a ring into an average flute on the piston. You do not part the ring lock more widely, than it really is required for its putting on on the piston.

Installation of a compression ring by means of a dilator of rings - an identification tag (if it is provided) has to be turned (arrow) up.

  1. In a similar manner establish top (No. 1) a compression ring. Track that the tag (point) was turned up. Do not mix the top ring with an average. The first (top) compression ring has to be established by the party with chamfered UP (whereas the second ring is put on by a facet DOWN). Usually the second ring aims from the top party two points, and the first (top) - one. Adhere to the instructions attached to a set.

The second compression ring has to be established by a facet DOWN whereas (top) - UP - do not mix the first!

  1. Repeat the procedure for all remained pistons.
