Removal, check of a state and installation of the camshaft and hydraulic pushers

These models of cars are equipped with safety cushions. The pillow constantly is in readiness and can work (to be inflated) at any time at the connected battery. In order to avoid casual operation of system (and receiving as a result of a trauma) every time during the work with safety cushion components (including blow sensors which can be located near a forward lattice / bumper) disconnect a negative wire from the battery. After shutdown of the battery before getting to work it is necessary to wait not less than 2 minutes (the system is equipped with the delay condenser which has to be discharged completely). For more details see the Head Sistem of onboard electric equipment.

The air conditioning system constantly is under pressure. Do not weaken nipple connections of lines and do not disconnect systems, any of components, before carrying out its discharge. Coolant has to be extorted from system in special compensatory and recovery ERA-blok at the station of dealer office or in a specialized workshop of car service. At a rassoyedineniye of lines of system surely put on goggles!

Measurement of height of working ledges (rise) of cams of the camshaft

Check of height of working ledges of cams is made for the purpose of assessment of degree of wear of a shaft and carried out before removal of a shaft from the engine.


  1. Uncover a head of cylinders (The section Removal and installation of covers of heads of cylinders).
  2. Bring the piston of the first cylinder into the provision of VMT of a step of compression (The section Reduction in the provision of VMT of the piston of the first cylinder). Fix the dial measuring instrument on the engine so that its plunger was coaxial to a bar of a pusher and rested against a yoke of the first piston (see an illustration in the Head the Line six-cylinder engine).
  3. Nullify the measuring instrument and begin to turn very slowly the camshaft in the normal direction (clockwise) until the arrow of the device does not stand on the maximum indication and will not begin to fall back. The maximum indication of the measuring instrument fixes to the maximum height of raising of a cam.
  4. Write down the indication, then return the piston to the provision of VMT of a step of compression.
  5. Install the measuring instrument over a yoke of the second valve of the first cylinder and repeat the procedure. Accurately write down results of all measurements.
  6. Repeat check for valves of the remained cylinders. As everyone their pistons during check has to be in the provision of VMT of a step of compression, pass from one of them to another simplest as ignition (see Specifications).
  7. Upon completion of measurements divide all written-down results on 1.5 for obtaining the general height of raising of each of cams (yokes provide transfer number 1.5:1). Compare results of calculations to requirements of Specifications. If raising of a cam is less admissible Specifications of value on 0,08 mm, the camshaft is considered worn-out and is subject to replacement.

Removal of the camshaft


  1. Make a discharge of the air conditioning system in dealer office or a specialized workshop where there is the corresponding equipment.
  2. Disconnect a negative wire from the battery.
  3. Remove the inlet pipeline, yokes, bars of pushers, a distributive chain with camshaft asterisks.
  4. Remove the distributor (The head Sistema of electric equipment of the engine). Remove a radiator, a forward (radiator) lattice and the condenser of the conditioner of air.

For providing necessary working space (for removal of the camshaft) there can be a need for an otbolchivaniye and removal of a vertical support of a clamp of the lock of a cowl (Head Kuzov).

  1. Roller type hydraulic pushers have to be marked by paint from the outer side. Such tags do not manage to be found, mark pushers independently before taking them.

At installation pushers surely have to be oriented correctly in order to avoid a rassovmeshcheniye of maslopodayushchy openings.

  1. Pay attention on put with paint of a tag (arrow), showing what party roller pushers have to be turned outside - if tags do not manage to be found, put them independently.

  1. There are several ways of extraction of hydraulic pushers from their nests. Many companies the special tool intended for capture and extraction of pushers is issued, however need for its application is not strictly obligatory. On rather new engines where the nagaroobrazovaniye is small pushers often it is possible to take from nests by means of a magnet or even manually. Also metalwork chertilka with the bent edge which is got under the lock ring established in the top part of each pusher well is suitable for a poddevaniye of pushers.

AT ALL application for capture of pushers (if only they are not subject to replacement) flat-nose pliers is not allowed - their sponges can easily damage superficial training of walls of pushers that is equivalent to their conclusion out of operation.

  1. Remove guides of pushers and pushers. It is necessary to put components in the organized order guaranteeing a possibility of their installation at assembly on the former places - it is the best of all to prepare in advance specially marked boxes.

  2. Carefully take the camshaft from the engine. In order to avoid damage of bearings when carrying out shaft cams through them try to support the last in the course of removal by the second hand as it is possible closer to the block.

Check of a state


  1. After the camshaft is taken from the engine, it needs to be washed out in solvent and to dry up, then to check necks of bearings for existence of cavities, traces of jamming and uneven wear. If necks are injured, perhaps injured also inserts of the corresponding bearings in the block. In this case both the shaft, and inserts are subject to replacement.

Replacement of bearings of the camshaft demands use of special tools and certain experience, and therefore lies outside qualification of the average amateur mechanic and in this manual is not considered. If bearings are in bad condition, the engine needs to be removed from the car and to deliver in a workshop of car service for the qualified performance of this work.

  1. If necks are found in satisfactory condition, measure by a micrometer their diameters. Write down results of measurements. Measurement of diameter has to be performed in several points of each neck (both on neck length, and on its forming surface) - it will help to reveal its ovality and conicity.
  2. Check camshaft cams for existence of traces of an overheat, scratches, chips, cavities and traces of uneven wear. If cams are found in satisfactory condition and results of measurement of height of their rises meet requirements of Specifications, the camshaft is subject to further use
  3. In case of equipment of the engine hydraulic pushers of usual flat type the camshaft has to be replaced every time when changing pushers and vice versa. However, if pushers of roller type are established, transfer of suitable pushers on a new shaft is quite admissible, however, it is necessary to establish each of pushers surely in the former nest.
  4. After careful cleaning attentively examine rollers of pushers on existence of signs of wear and damages, make sure that they rotate freely.
  1. Rollers (if they are provided) in hydraulic pushers have to rotate freely, without zakusyvaniye - check them also for existence of signs of wear and an excessive side play.



  1. Grease cams and necks of the camshaft with assembly motive lubricant.
  1. Before installation of the camshaft grease its cams and necks with assembly motive lubricant.
  1. Pass the tool for keeping of the camshaft (S-3509, or its equivalent) throughout an opening under the distributor. Use of this tool will prevent too deep landing of a shaft and knocking-out of a spherical stopper in a back part of the block. The tool has to remain on the place until the distributive chain is established.

If it is not possible to get the special tool, you bring a shaft to the block very slowly and carefully, trying to avoid knocking-out of a stopper. If tightness of installation of a stopper is broken, there will be very strong leak of oil.

The scheme of use of the S-3509 tool at installation of the camshaft.

  1. Slowly insert the camshaft into the engine. Support a shaft by the second hand as it is possible closer to the block and try not to damage bearings at a wire of shaft cams through them. You do not enter a shaft more deeply than it is necessary for installation of a persistent plate and an oil level.
  2. Establish a distributive chain with asterisks (The section Removal, check of a state and installation of a cover of a distributive chain, the chain and its asterisks). Combine distributive tags on asterisks of cranked and distributive shaft.
  3. Install into place the distributor (The head Sistema of electric equipment of the engine).

After combination correctly of asterisks of shaft, the runner of the distributor has to turn to the plug of a wire of a spark plug of the sixth cylinder.

  1. Oil pushers pure motive and install them in the block. If replacement of pushers was not made, they have to be established in the former nests by the party marked with paint to a cavity. Establish guides (shooters to the camshaft) and the holder of pushers.
  2. You make further installation as it should be, the return to a removal order.
  3. Remove motive oil, add the crankcase Mopar conditioner (No. 3419130) or an equivalent and establish a new oil filter (The head Nastroyki and routine maintenance).
  4. Start the engine check it for leaks and check oil pressure.

Do not lift the frequency of rotation of the engine above turns of bystry idling until hydraulic pushers are not filled with oil and again will not begin to work silently.

  1. If replacement of the camshaft or pushers was made, the engine needs to be warmed up to the normal working temperature and to force it to work on turns of bystry idling within at least 15 - 20 minutes for extra earnings of components. After that again replace oil and an oil filter.
