Checks of levels of liquids (each 400 km (250 miles) of a run or weekly)

The checks of levels of liquid given below have to be made weekly, or through each 400 km (250 miles) of a run. Additional checks of levels of liquids are made within the procedures of special service given below. Regardless of terms of conducting checks pay attention to traces of leak of liquid under the car which can be the testimony of the malfunction which is subject to immediate elimination.

Liquids are the integral and major component providing normal functioning of lubrication systems, coolings, braking, couplings and washing of a windshield. In view of the fact that liquids during normal operation of the car are subject to gradual fluidifying and pollution, it is necessary to make their replacement periodically. Before starting replacement or addition of liquid in any of the listed below components study requirements of subsection the Recommended lubricants and liquids of Specifications at the beginning of this Chapter.

For conducting check of levels of liquids the car has to be parked on the flat horizontal platform.

Motive oil

Check of level of motive oil is made by means of the measuring probe inserted into a special tube and reaching an engine case pallet bottom.

The probe of measurement of level of motive oil on the V8 models is on a forward wall of the engine, behind a radiator.

Measurement of level of motive oil is performed before the first in this day trip or not less than 15 min. later after switching off of the engine. Check of level immediately after a stop of the engine will yield incorrect result as a part of oil will be at the same time in the top part of the engine.

Take the probe from a tube and dry wipe its edge with pure rags or a paper towel. Completely enter the probe back into a tube and again take it. Estimate height of the site of an edge of the probe moistened with oil. In case of need make having added oils, having brought it to the level which is between the marks ADD (to Add) and FULL (Full) on the measuring site of an edge of the probe.

Level of motive oil constantly has to be supported between marks in an edge of the measuring probe - rise in level from the mark ADD to the mark FULL requires about 1 l of oil.

Do not overflow the engine, pouring too much oil as it is fraught with failure of epiploons, emergence of leak of oil and a pelting of spark plugs.

Having added oils in the engine it is made after removal of a cover of the jellied mouth located on a cover of a head of cylinders. In order to avoid the passage of oil it is necessary to use the butterdish equipped with a long nose or a funnel.

Oil is filled in in the engine after removal of a cover of the jellied mouth located on a cover of a head of cylinders - previously surely wipe a cover and the surface surrounding a mouth in order to avoid hit in the dirt engine.

Check of level of motive oil is an important preventive step of maintenance of the car. Continuous falling of level of oil speaks about existence of its leaks which reason defects of epiploons and laying, wear of piston rings or the directing plugs of valves can be. If oil has a dairy and figurative consistence or at it obviously there is water, it is quite probable that defects of laying of a head(s) of cylinders or a crack in casting of the block take place. It is necessary to make check of a condition of the engine immediately. Except level it is necessary to check as well a condition of oil. The first time taking the measuring probe when checking level of oil, remove from it oil traces big and index fingers. Engine cooler

Do not allow hit of antifreeze on open parts of the body and the painted surfaces of the car. Immediately wash away incidentally got splashes a plentiful amount of water. You do not store new and do not throw the merged cooler in the places available to children and animals - the sweetish smell of antifreeze can easily draw their attention. Hit even of insignificant quantity of a cooler in an organism can lead to a lethal outcome! Immediately wipe the cooler spilled on a garage floor. You store antifreeze in hermetically closed container and immediately eliminate all found leakages of the cooling system.

All considered in this manual of the car are equipped with the cooling system of compensation type working with an excessive pressure. The broad tank made of white plastic is located in a motive compartment and connected by a hose to a cover of a jellied mouth of a radiator. At an engine overheat the cooler is forced out via the valve in a cover of a radiator and on a hose comes to a broad tank. In process of cooling of the engine the cooler is automatically poured from a tank back in a radiator that allows to support automatically the level demanded it in system.

The broad tank of system is located in the right back corner of a motive compartment - try to support constantly cooler level near the mark FULL in a tank wall.

Check of level of liquid in a broad tank of the cooling system has to be made regularly.

Do not uncover a tank for check of level of liquid in it at the hot engine. Cooler level in a broad tank changes with change of temperature of the engine. At the cold engine the level of a cooler has to be slightly above the mark ADD (to Add) on a tank wall. After an engine warming up liquid level in a tank has to rise, having approached the mark FULL (Full). If these requirements are not fulfilled, wait for cooling of the engine, then uncover a tank and add in it the number of 50% of mix of antifreeze, necessary for adjustment of level, on the basis of ethylene glycol with water.

After a trial trip double-check cooler level in a tank. If for reduction of level of a cooler to the required value it is required only insignificant having added, it is possible just to use clear water. However, often repeating regular additives of water shortly will lead to inadmissible dilution of antifreeze. Thus, for maintenance of the required structure of a cooler, it is recommended to make for correctly grouped mix. For formation of the required composition of mix it is convenient to use an empty package from under milk. It is not necessary to add to ready mix of additive and inhibitors of corrosion.

If the level of a cooler falls constantly, it can be the evidence of leaks in system. Check for existence of signs of leaks a radiator, hoses, a cover of a jellied mouth, drain traffic jams and the water pump (The section Check of Serviceability of the Cooling System (each 4800 km (3000 miles) of a run or times in 3 months)). If it is not possible to find signs of leaks, it is necessary to make check of a cover of a radiator pressure - address on car repair shop.

If there is a need for removal of a cover of a radiator, previously wait for full cooling of the engine, then wrap up a cover a thick layer of rags and slowly turn off it to the first emphasis. In case from under a cover steam begins to escape, let's the engine cool down still, then uncover.

Check also a condition of a cooler. The cooler has to be rather transparent. If it has red-brown color of a rust, the system should be emptied, washed out and filled with fresh mix. As the corrosion inhibitor which is a part of mix loses the protective properties over time, change of a cooler should be made through the intervals provided by the schedule of routine maintenance regardless of its state.

Liquid of washing of a windshield

Liquid for washing of a windshield of the car is filled in in the tank manufactured of plastic also located in a motive compartment.

The tank of liquid of washing of a windshield is located in the left part of a motive compartment - shares of liquid can be made after removal of a folding cover.

In areas with a temperate climate usual water can be applied to washing of a windshield, however the quantity it in the tank should not exceed 2/3 volumes of the last for the purpose of secure on a case of expansion of water when freezing during, for example, night cold snap. In areas with a frigid climate in the tank special antifreeze has to refuel - ask in shops of automobile accessories, - reducing a liquid freezing point. Mix antifreeze with water in the proportions specified on packing.

Do not apply the antifreeze intended for use in the cooling system as it is aggressive in relation to the painted surfaces at all!

In order to avoid frosting of glass when using of washers previously include heating in cold weather (having blown) in glasses.

Battery electrolyte

The majority of models of the cars considered in this manual are equipped with rechargeable batteries tight (apart from air vents) type and have no jellied covers. Carrying out a regular doliv of water in such batteries is not required. If for any reason your car is equipped with the battery of the demanding service of type, it is regularly necessary to remove from it the top covers and to check electrolyte level in banks. Especially important such checks become in warm season.

Brake fluid and hydraulic liquid of coupling

The main brake cylinder (and if it is provided, the coupling cylinder) is fixed in the left top corner of a partition of a motive compartment.

Liquid is well visible through translucent walls of the plastic tank. If liquid level inadmissibly fell before uncovering the tank for the purpose of the work of a doliv, previously carefully wipe its top part with pure rags in order to avoid hit of dirt in hydraulic system (brake / couplings).

Level of brake fluid can be easily checked through translucent walls of the tank - for the work of a doliv uncover.

At liquid addition carefully add it in the tank, trying to avoid hit of splashes on the surrounding painted surfaces. Use only liquid of the required grade as mixing of two various types of liquids can lead to irreversible damage of system (see subsection the Recommended oils and lubricants of Specifications at the beginning of this Chapter or the operation manual on the car).

Hit of brake fluid in eyes can lead to a serious trauma, besides, liquid is aggressive in relation to the painted surfaces of the car. Therefore at the treatment of her observe extreme care. Do not use the brake fluid stored in an open container more than one year - liquid is extremely hygroscopic (has ability to absorb moisture from the atmosphere). Excessive content in brake fluid of moisture is fraught with dangerous decrease in efficiency of braking.

At this stage liquid and the main cylinder can be checked for existence of traces of pollution. In case of detection of particles of dirt, drops of water or a deposit the system has to be emptied and filled with fresh liquid.

After filling of the tank to the required level take care of reliable tightening of its cover / stopper for the purpose of prevention of leaks.

Level of brake fluid in the main cylinder will fall slightly in process of wear of brake shoes and boots during normal operation of the car as at the same time there is fuller replacement of pistons of supports / wheel cylinders. If for maintenance of the required level in the main cylinder it is required regular and frequent having added liquids, it is a leak sign in system which source has to be immediately revealed and liquidated. Carefully check a condition of all brake lines and nipple connections (for more details see the Section Check of a Condition of Brake Mechanisms (each 12 000 km (7500 miles) of a run, or time in 6 months)).

If during check of level of liquid of the main cylinder it is found out that one or both tanks are empty or almost empty, the brake system has to be pumped over (The head the Brake system).
