Check of a condition of brake mechanisms (each 12 000 km (7500 miles) of a run, or time in 6 months)

Detailed illustrations of an arrangement of components of brake mechanisms are given in the Head the Brake system.


The dust produced in brake mechanisms may contain noxious to health asbestos. Do not blow off brake dust compressed air at all and try not to inhale it. When working on repair and service of brake mechanisms use the special filtering mask or a respirator. Under no circumstances do not apply to cleaning of components of brake mechanisms solvents on an oil basis. For this purpose the special cleaning structure or the denatured alcohol has to be used only!

In addition to the review periods of the brake system stipulated by the schedule of routine maintenance of the car, the condition of brake mechanisms has to be checked every time at removal of wheels or at manifestation of signs of malfunction of brakes.

For check of a condition of components of brake mechanisms the car has to be lifted above the ground and installed on props. Remove wheels (see Poddomkrachivaniye's Section and towage at the beginning of the Management).

Disk brake mechanisms

Disk brake mechanisms usually equip forward wheels of the car, but in certain cases - and back. Wear of brake shoes over the limits stipulated in Specifications can lead to irreversible damage of brake disks.

Supports of disk brake mechanisms in which blocks are established after removal of wheels become well visible. In each support there is one external brake shoe and one internal. The condition of all four blocks has to be checked.

Each support is equipped with an observation port or an opening through which the condition of blocks can be checked. Thickness of overlays of blocks has to be checked by peeping in a support from each of its end faces, and also through the top observation port. If material of blocks is worn-out below an admissible limit (lower than 7,9 mm), all set of blocks is subject to replacement.

Blocks of disk brake mechanisms can be examined through the opening which is specially provided in the support case - for carrying out measurement apply a ruler to an observation port.


 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. If you meet difficulties with determining thickness of the remained frictional material, remove blocks for more detailed research (The head the Brake system).
  2. Before installation of wheels into place make sure of lack of leak of brake fluid and/or damages of brake hoses (cracks, splittings, etc.) in the area their connection to unions of supports. In case of need replace hoses (or unions) (The head the Brake system).
  3. Check a condition of brake disks. In case of detection of deep scratches, furrows and traces of an overheat, assembly of a nave with a disk needs to be removed for carrying out recovery work (The head the Brake system).

Drum brake mechanisms

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. On back brake mechanisms remove drums, having pulled together them from pins of driving shaft / half shafts and brake assemblies. If the drum does not give in to removal, make sure that the parking brake is released, then moisten with the getting oil a joint between a nave and a drum and repeat attempt to remove a drum.
  2. If the drum still does not give in to removal, it is necessary "to release" the self-regulator mechanism slightly. For this purpose at first it is necessary to take a small stopper from a board of the brake mechanism.
  3. Having removed a stopper, insert the thin screw-driver into an opening and raise the regulator lever, having taken away it from a gear castor, then by means of the special adjusting tool or besides the screw-driver turn a castor back on several turns. It will lead to moving away of brake boots from drum walls. If the drum is not removed and now, tap it on all perimeter the hammer with soft brisk from within.
  1. The thin screw-driver raise the regulator lever, then the special tool or other screw-driver turn the released gear castor back on several turns.
  1. Having removed a drum, you watch to touching brake dust (see the prevention at the beginning of the Section).
  2. Check thickness and a condition of frictional slips both (forward and back) brake boots. If material of slips is worn-out below an admissible limit (1.6 mm), boots have to be replaced. Boots are subject to replacement as well in case of detection in them of cracks or existence zapolirovanny to gloss or polluted by oil / brake fluid of sites of slips.
  1. If slips are pasted on boots, measurement of their thickness is performed from the upper edge of a metal substrate to the outer edge of a slip, as shown in the drawing if an overlay of a priklepan, then measurement is performed from the outer edge of a slip to a surface of heads of rivets.
  1. Make sure that all springs of the brake mechanism are connected and are in satisfactory condition.
  2. Check components of the brake mechanism for existence of traces of leak of brake fluid. Carefully hook rubber boots of the wheel cylinders located in the top part of boots. Existence of any signs of leaks demands immediate carrying out capital repairs of wheel cylinders (The head the Brake system). Check also for existence of signs of leaks brake hoses and their nipple connections.
  1. For check of a condition of the wheel cylinder the small screw-driver carefully hook a rubber boot of the cylinder.
  1. Wipe the internal surface of the reel with the pure rags moistened with a special cleaner or methyl alcohol. Remember that asbestos is very noxious to health - do not inhale brake dust!
  2. Check the internal surface of the reel for existence of cracks, cavities, deep scratches and sites of an overheat which are noticeable by change of coloring of a surface. If defects cannot be eliminated by means of a thin emery paper, it is necessary to deliver a drum in a workshop of car service for a pro-point.
  3. If during check all components are found in satisfactory condition, install the reel into place.
  4. Establish wheels and lower the car on the earth.

Parking brake

Control of the parking brake is exercised manually, by means of the lever. The parking brake influences brake mechanisms of back wheels. The simplest and most evident way of check of serviceability of functioning of the parking brake is the car stop on the inclined plane. If after raising of a control lever the parking brake the car does not keep on a bias not movably, the brake needs adjustment (The head the Brake system).
