Towage of the trailer

General information

In order to avoid violation of guarantee certificates, strictly follow the recommendations given below concerning rules of the equipment of hook-on devices and towage of trailers.

Strictly adhere to the schedule of routine maintenance of the car (see the Head Nastroyki and routine maintenance). Do not forget that when using the vehicle many procedures should be made for towage of the trailer more often.

Do not exceed norm of loading of the car at all. Except the maximum permissible load on bridges (GAWR), also such characteristics as weight load of the hook-on device, and also mass of all baggage placed in the car and the additional equipment have to be considered. Remember that any weight, placed on the trailer as a result leads to increase in load of the car.

Do not forget that violation of the rules of towage of the trailer can lead to the most serious consequences. Try to adhere to the recommendations stated below:

  • You watch that the center of gravity of the freight placed in the trailer was displaced a little forward (so that it was the share of the hook-on device of the car near (10 ÷ 15) by % of full mass gross of the trailer. Violation of this requirement usually leads to violation of course stability of a hitch due to oscillatory side movements of the trailer during the movement.
  • Do not connect the hydraulic drive of brake mechanisms of the trailer to a brake contour of the car.
  • The equipment of trailers weighing over 907 kg brakes is an indispensable condition of towage.
  • Do not connect an electrical wiring of signal running lights of the trailer to the main plait of an electrical wiring of the car. Connection has to be made with application of a standard plait for the equipment of hook-on devices. Violation of this requirement can lead to failure of electric equipment, and also receiving serious injuries.
  • Do not overload the car and/or the trailer over admissible norms - it can lead to loss of control of management, decrease in efficiency of functioning of brakes, an overload of bridges, components of the transmission line, steering, a suspension bracket and the bearing body elements.
  • You watch that the freight placed in the trailer was reliably fixed.
  • Use only branded hook-on devices which installation has to be charged to specialists of dealer office of the Chrysler company for the car equipment.

Admissible weight characteristics of the trailer

Gross of the trailer (GTW) enter full mass weight actually of the trailer, plus the weight of the freight placed in it and the hinged equipment. The most exact way of definition of GTW is the placement of completely loaded trailer on automobile scales.

Try that 60% of mass of freight were the share of a forward part of the trailer that provides implementation of the requirement about that (10 ÷15) % of GTW were the share of the hook-on device near.

At towage of trailers with load of the hook-on device over 160 kg or when GTW exceeds 1600 kg the hitch has to be equipped with the device twist - control and balancing of a turnbuckle.

Hook-on devices

Hook-on devices of the Class I are intended for towage of trailers with GTW on more than 907 kg. The device can always be bought in dealer offices of the Chrysler company.

Devices of the Class III allow towage of trailers mass gross (GTW) to 2 268 kg.

The car equipped with the hook-on device of the Class IV can be used for towage of trailers with GTW to 2 948 kg.

The weight loading falling on the hook-on device has to make not less than 10%, but no more than 15% of GTW and not to exceed 340 kg at all.

Devices of the increased durability

Hook-on devices of Classes III and IV of cars of a factory complete set usually consist of the turnbuckle established on elements of a frame and the listed above necessary equipment. Twist use of such additional components as the device - control, brake mechanisms, the balance weight, low-profile mirrors, etc. it is strictly recommended.

Class III devices

As it was already mentioned above, hook-on devices of the Class III are intended for towage of trailers by mass gross of GTW) no more than 2 268 kg. For successful towage of such trailers it is necessary to use only the models meeting the following requirements:

These devices allow to make towage of trailers weighing up to 2 948 kg. Have to be established on the following models:

Councils for providing optimum operating conditions of the cooling system during towage of the trailer

In order to avoid overheats of the engine and transmission try to adhere to the following recommendations:

  • During a stop in the conditions of a city cycle you transfer transmission to neutral situation and lift engine turns.
  • At movement along the highway speed has to be slightly lower, than at operation of the car without trailer.
    c) temporarily disconnect К/В.
  • In time perform procedures of service of the cooling system (see the Head Nastroyki and routine maintenance).

In order to avoid a potential overheat of AT turn off the raising transfer (About / D OFF) at the movement on the hilly area, or on the most intense sites you transfer AT to situation 2. In order to avoid excess switchings of transmission move on the car equipped with AT lowered on one step peredache.15 At frequent towage of the trailer (in particular in the mountain area or in hot weather authors of this manual recommend to make change of ATF through each 24 000 km (15 000 miles) of a run, and also to equip transmission with the oil cooler (if that is not established fabrichno).

1) Towing loading of the car has to be lowered at the expense of weight load of a turnbuckle for the purpose of maintenance of load of the back bridge (GAWR) within 1 338 kg.

At towage of the heavy trailer try to avoid detonations in the engine. In case of those reduce loadings in order to avoid damage of pistons.
