Driveshafts, differentials and bridges - the general information
The driveshaft serves for transfer of power from transmission (2WD) or the transfer case (4WD) to the back bridge of the car. On all-wheel drive (4WD) models this driveshaft carries the name of back. The second driveshaft of all-wheel drive models serves for transfer of power from the transfer case to the forward bridge and is called forward.
At the movement of the car on an uneven paving bridges begin "to float" up-down therefore driveshafts work in the conditions of continuous change of a corner of the situation in relation to transmission / to the transfer case and bridges of a suspension bracket. Such mode of functioning is possible thanks to inclusion in structure of shaft (from both of them the ends) cardan hinges. Change of corners of position of driveshafts naturally leads to need of continuous change of their length that is reached thanks to application of the sliding holders of crosspieces.
On models of 1993 of the issue the cardan hinge of a series 1310, and in a back shaft - the series 2950 hinge is installed in the forward driveshaft. Two types of cardan knots - with one hinge and two hinges are used.
Components of typical cardan knot of two-hinged type
On models of 1994 of the issue on both (forward and back) driveshafts cardan hinges of a series 1310 are used. Again two types of cardan knots - with one hinge, or with two are applied.
On models of 1995 of the issue three types of cardan knots - with one hinge, with two hinges and with the CV hinge are used. The CV hinge is not subject to repair; in case of damage of the hinge or its protective cover the driveshaft assembled has to change.
On all-wheel drive models of 1995 of the issue three types of the forward driveshaft are applied. Shaft of the First and Second types are equipped with one-hinged cardan knots from the party turned to the bridge of a suspension bracket and two-hinged knots from the transfer case. The only difference of one of these types of shaft from another is application of various design of protection of holders of crosspieces against dust and dirt. On the First type the dustproof cover whereas on the second the rubber cover is used is applied. Shaft of the Third type are not equipped by the sliding holder of a crosspiece. Instead of it in them the CV hinge installed from the forward bridge is used. Need for use of the sliding holder disappears in view of ability of the CV hinge to contract and extend. The shaft equipped with vents in the CV hinge allows to support constantly driveshaft length in the course of the movement of the car on optimum value. However, the full length of the driveshaft in this case is exposed in the course of its production. Do not try to make adjustment of length of the driveshaft of the Third type.
Fabrichno the established cardan knots do not need lubricant. Lubricant of the sliding holders of crosspieces of the forward driveshaft of all-wheel drive models 1993 and 1994 of of the issue and the driveshaft of the First type of models of 1995 of the issue has to be produced regularly, according to the schedule of routine maintenance of the car (The head Nastroyki and routine maintenance). The sliding holders of crosspieces of such shaft are equipped for this purpose with the lubricant ZERK union.
In the course of installation on the car careful and very exact balancing of both forward, and back driveshafts is made. In view of the last, every time after removal shaft have to be established into place in accuracy in the same way as they stood earlier. The neglect implementation of this requirement is fraught with development of strong vibrations and, as a result, serious damages of the transmission line of the car.
The differential is located in the pig-iron case which, in turn, is an integral part of assembly of the bridge. The stamped steel cover of a pribolchen to the open back party of the case also serves for ensuring access to its internal components in the course of survey and preventive maintenance. For represents transfer of gipoidny type, the central line of the leading gear wheel in which is located below the central line of the conducted gear wheel of the main transfer. Except differential of a standard design on cars of this brand also Trac-Lock blocks with blocking can be installed (only to back bridges of Model 35). If one of wheels begins to revolve, having lost coupling with a paving, the Trac-Lock block begins to transfer his twisting percent to opposite. In a type of need of application for adjustment and capital repairs of differentials of the special tool, and also existence of a certain qualification of personnel, these works are a prerogative of experts of a workshop of car service or dealer office of the Chrysler company.
Forward power shafts of all-wheel drive (4WD) are placed in a sleeve of forward Bridge Modeli 30. The bridge represents two steel sleeves welded on the pig-iron central case in which assembly of differential is placed. The block is equipped with the ventilation serving for dumping of the excessive internal pressure arising owing to evaporation and thermal expansion of lubricant liquid. Peredny Bridge is equipped with power shafts of semi-floating type on which loading is perceived by bearings of naves. Shaft fasten to bearings of naves by means of nuts. Service of bearings is made only assembled, i.e. they are not subject to restoration. The external ends of power shafts are equipped with hinges of equal angular speeds (CV hinges) that provides a possibility of turn of forward wheels to the right-to the left. Besides, the bridge is equipped with system of anti-blocking of brakes (ABS). ABS sensors are fixed in assemblies of rotary fists; rotors of sensors are pressed in shaft near flanges of naves. Outside to a cover of the case of differential of Bridge Modeli 30 fastens Schild with data on serial number and transfer number. The identification code of date of issue of the bridge is beaten out behind on its sleeve. When replacing the bridge always consider these data.
Back half shafts (all models) are placed in sleeves of Bridge Modeli 35 which is almost identical on a design to assembly of Model 30 of the forward bridge described above. Sometimes Bridge Modeli 35 can be in addition equipped with the Trac-Lock block and differential of limited sliding. Serial number and transfer number of differential of Bridge Modeli 35 can be besides found on fixed on a differential cover Schild. The code of date of production is beaten out on the back party of a sleeve. All these data surely have to be taken into account when replacing the bridge.
